YWCA - R.A.C.E to hold public forum at TPAC
Thursday, May 14th

The R.A.C.E comittee in conjunction with the City of Topeka Human Relations Committee will hold a public screening of Producer William Kavanagh's documentary "Brick by Brick".

Kavanagh will moderate the screening and discussion on Thursday, May 14th from 6 PM to 8 PM in the TPAC Lobby.

Brick by Brick describes how a ghetto was created through public policies.  The film initially paints a picture of isolation for many people of color in the city, most of whom are living in segregated neighborhoods served by failing schools.  The primary storytellers are local people from different backgrounds, who relate their personal encounters with housing and educational discrimination, as well as others who experience very different opportunities across town.

Learn about the event at www.brick-by-brick.com or e-mail hrc@topeka.org

TPAC's Sheffel Theater Clinic Receives Donation

Topeka – Last week, Ben Jones, Director of Public Affairs for the Union Pacific Railroad presented a check to Barbara Wiggins, Executive Director of the Topeka Performing Arts Center.

Each year the Union Pacific Foundation (UPF) donates monies to 501 (c) 3 organizations in the communities in which they serve. This year UPF awarded TPAC's Sheffel Theater Clinic $2,000.

The Sheffel Theater Clinic (STC) provides an important cultural supplement to area schools' arts education curriculum by introducing students to the creativity and magic of live theater.

The Sheffel Theater Clinic at TPAC invites every third grader in the Topeka and Northeast Kansas area to a one-day, intensive workshop that gives them a hands-on experience in all areas of theater—from acting to theater etiquette. Along the way the students learn about costuming, make-up, vocal expression and movement as it relates to communication from the stage. They also learn about the "unseen" technical aspects required to put on a stage performance. The program is scheduled over three months each year (typically January to March) to accommodate small, manageable groups, with an estimated total of 2,300 students participating.
