This Weekend at TPAC

Ballet

"Cowboys and Classics," the title of Ballet Midwest's spring program, aptly describes the diversity of dance the company will present this weekend at the Topeka Performing Art Center.

The troupe will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday on the stage of the Georgia Neese Gray Performance Hall at TPAC, 214 S.E. 8th. Ticket Prices are: $14 adults, $10 seniors, $7 students to age 18. Family packs with 2 adults and 2 children are $35.

Rather than stage a full-length ballet, Ballet Midwest artistic director Barbara Ebert said the company decided to offer a mixed repertoire performance.

"it's a nice chance for the audience to see all the different styles of dance that the company can do and it gives a lot of variety to the performers," Ebert said.

The "Cowboys" in the title refers to one of the eight dance sequences, "Billy the Kid," which is set the music of Aaron Copland and tells the famed outlaw's llegend through dance.

The "Classics" end of the dance spectrum is best represented by the company's signature piece, "Pas de Quatre," a work that has its roots in 1845 when four of the era's greatest ballerinas — Marie Taglioni, Lucille Grahn, Carlotta Grisi and Fanny Cerrito — came together for four performances, one of them attended by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Couture for Cancer

Compassion never looked so good when combining couture fashion and one-of-a-kind home décor in the fight against cancer. Join us at the American Cancer Society's 5 th  annual Couture for Cancer – the shopping, social and charity event of the year.

On April 18, from 4 to 7 p.m., northeast Kansas women (and a few lucky men) will have the opportunity to enjoy designer fashion and home décor from all over the world.  The trendy fashion event raises funds for the American Cancer Society's research, education, advocacy and patient services. In four years, Couture has raised more than $200,000. This year's goal is the highest yet, set at $92,000.

"Couture for Cancer is the premier fashion fundraising event in our area," said Ashley Charest, Couture for Cancer chair. "With nearly everyone in the United States being confronted with cancer, the true success of this event is measured in the number of incredible women who band together for a night of fun, friendship and fashion."
Couture for Cancer's popularity and growth has elevated the event into a new venue this year, at the Topeka Performing Arts Center in downtown Topeka. Attendees will enjoy hors d'oeuvres, cocktails and shopping for designer clothes, jewelry, handbags, home items, cosmetic treatments, spa experiences and more. WIBW TV 13 anchorwoman Melissa Brunner will again host the live show.

Reservations are available for $65 per woman and may be made by calling the American Cancer Society at (785) 273-4462 or by e-mailing stacie.schroeder @cancer.org.
