This Weekend at TPAC
Ballet
"Cowboys and Classics," the title of Ballet Midwest's spring program, aptly describes the diversity of dance the company will present this weekend at the Topeka Performing Art Center.
The troupe will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday on the stage of the Georgia Neese Gray Performance Hall at TPAC, 214 S.E. 8th. Ticket Prices are: $14 adults, $10 seniors, $7 students to age 18. Family packs with 2 adults and 2 children are $35.
Rather than stage a full-length ballet, Ballet Midwest artistic director Barbara Ebert said the company decided to offer a mixed repertoire performance.
"it's a nice chance for the audience to see all the different styles of dance that the company can do and it gives a lot of variety to the performers," Ebert said.
The "Cowboys" in the title refers to one of the eight dance sequences, "Billy the Kid," which is set the music of Aaron Copland and tells the famed outlaw's llegend through dance.
The "Classics" end of the dance spectrum is best represented by the company's signature piece, "Pas de Quatre," a work that has its roots in 1845 when four of the era's greatest ballerinas — Marie Taglioni, Lucille Grahn, Carlotta Grisi and Fanny Cerrito — came together for four performances, one of them attended by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
